The Grooming Course

The course is set up in three units and the first unit must be satisfactorily completed before the next is begun.

Unit I - Basics

This level is designed to teach the student understanding of the canine and feline subject, their psychology and basic behavior, humane restraint of animals, etc. Also, the student is introduced to basic grooming equipment and proper technique in its use. Approximately, 50 clock hours of class lecture and practical “hands on” experience with live animals prepares them for the unit II which is working in the grooming parlor.

(10 clock hours is equivalent to 1 ten hour working day. 8am-6pm)

Unit II - Beginning Basic Grooming Techniques

Students must successfully complete Unit I in order to continue to Unit II. Students will learn and practice grooming techniques on live animals: including brushing out topcoat and undercoat, combing, dematting, clipping nails, cleaning ears, clipping hair with electric clippers, bathing and drying techniques, basic scissoring, pattern placement of popular breeds, and bow and cologne placement. Class time is approximately 240 clock hours or 24 working days of instruction.

Unit III - Continuing Grooming Skills

Students must successfully complete Unit II in order to continue to Unit III. Students will concentrate on properly grooming the popular breeds of dogs and cats (optional) according to their breed standards, as well as begin to use artistic and creativity in mixed breed animals and owners requests for a variance from standard. They will concentrate on perfecting their grooming skills while increasing their speed and efficiency. Class completion is approximately 240 clock hours or 24 working days.

Unit IV - Business Management Skills - (Informational Packet)

Students upon completion of Unit III will receive helpful information to aid in realizing the costs, procedures, and tax liabilities, etc. of beginning a new small business. Care package contains variety of information helpful to new groomers. There is no additional class time given to this unit. Students will receive a diploma of satisfactory completion of this course after UNIT III.

Career Opportunities

invisible.gif - 82 BytesIt is estimated that there are over 120 million pets in the United States and 43% of those receive professional grooming services. It is evident that the pet industry is healthy and growing. As noted in the Pet Grooming market at www.petgroomer.com, there are over 6,000 pet dogs and cats in the U.S. for every grooming business today and there are chronic shortages in many areas for skilled pet bathers, groomers and master pet trimmers.
invisible.gif - 82 BytesCertification as a professional all breed pet groomer also provides an excellent source of animal experience required for other animal-related careers such as veterinary assistants, kennel care takers, and dog show handlers.
